Sun Plaza Medan has a good Factory Outlet store from where I got a pair of Adidas for a very reasonable price. While I was in Medan, I stayed at the Danau Toba Hotel, one of the biggest hotels in the middle of town. It is just within walking distance from Sun Plaza. I am documenting Sun Plaza as one of the main retail centres of Medan for AsiaExplorers. If you have been here before, share your experiences in the Add Comments section below.
Sun Plaza is the newest and touted as one of the largest malls in Medan. It was opened in 2004, with Sogo being the anchor tenant. Other tenants include Ace Hardware, Starbucks, Mango, gift shops, small bakeries, pirated VHS, DVDs, and computer software, etc. The shops seemed to target the mid- to high-end shoppers.
With some time to spare and feeling groggy after the heavy lunch, we headed for the hair salon on the 4th level for a good ole hair wash and trim. Half an hour later, we emerged S$5 poorer but refreshed to carry on shopping. Big plaza and lots of happening in Saturday and Sunday. Plenty of food choices from western to eastern. Has a big supermarket, named Hypermart which offer the equal style of shopping like Carrefour. Has more luxury goods than other malls in town.
Sun Plaza is built over an area of more than 29,000 square meters. Total building area is more than 87,000 square meters with a total area of leased more than 62,000 square meters.
Architects and building designers are not intended to create a place that just serves as a location for shopping, but the colored community spirit containers or belief in a better future. They wanted to create a place in which people can acquire a pleasant experience, and architecture blend with the presence of visitors and leave an impression.
The ideas developed in this design process aims at building a positive attitude anyone who visited the Sun Plaza. In addition to passing the form of facades and building elements, the spirit is also expressed by eight statues of human figures in the main entrance, which welcomes visitors with a variety of dynamic posture.
Its location is very strategic to the shopping center is visited by students, university students, and tourists in the country and abroad. Sun Plaza is also adjacent to the Office of the Governor of North Sumatra, Medan Grand Mosque (the largest mosques in Sumatra), Medan SMA 1, and Cambridge Apartments. In this shopping center there Pujasera, Sun 21, and Sogo department stores.
