As the gate of North Sumatra, Polonia Airport is the fourth largest international airport after Soekarno-Hatta Jakarta, Juanda Surabaya and Bali's Ngurah Rai. Located 2 km from the city of Medan, the airport serves flights to big cities like Jakarta and Batam, as well as Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Ipoh and Singapore.
Over an area of 144 hectares, this airport has a runway 2,900 meters long, four taxiway and apron area of 81 455 m2. Two terminal which has a total area of 13 811 m2, designed to accommodate a passenger up to 900 thousand. The terminal comprises a terminal for domestic flights. The airport is also equipped with a spacious parking lot with a capacity of 300 cars in the domestic flight terminal and 200 cars on the international flight terminal.
In addition to aviation facilities, at both terminals, there are few facilities to freshen up airport users such as cafeterias, money changer, restaurant, snack bar, souvenir shop, watel and Duty Free Shop. Because the function is an international airport, Polonia is also equipped with a ministry of immigration, health quarantine, animal quarantine, plant quarantine, fish quarantine, and the Tourism Information Service.
There are nine airlines operating here, namely Garuda Indonesia, Merpati Nusantara, Rainbow, Mandala Airlines, Pelita Air, Mobil Oil, Silk water, MAS and SMAC. While domestic flight routes is Banda Aceh, Meulaboh, Lokok, Lhokseumawe, GN. Sitoli, Padang, Palembang, Jakarta, Pekanbaru, Batam and Pontianak. There is also an international destination to Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Singapore.
In order to enhance the safety, operation of the cargo terminal is using one-door system, to curb the movement of cargo and prevent manipulation of the flow of goods.
Its location close to downtown and the capacity that is no longer enough to accommodate an increasingly hectic activity, the airport will be moved to Kuala Namu, Deli Serdang regency. For the first phase, Kuala Namu Airport will be built with a capacity of 8 million passengers with a runway length of 3,750 m, and can accommodate as many as 10,000 aircraft activities each year. This airport will be designed modern and designed to have rail access and begs the city check-in.
